Why a doctor

Prescription medicine deserves a medical hand.

Botulinum toxin is a Schedule 4 prescription medicine. In South Africa it may only be prescribed and administered by a registered medical practitioner, and that is exactly who will be treating you.

Trained in facial anatomy

Years of medical training mean every injection is placed with an understanding of the muscles, nerves and vessels beneath the skin.

A proper consultation

Your medical history, medication and goals are reviewed before anything is prescribed. If a treatment is not right for you, you will be told so.

Sourced and handled correctly

Products come from authorised South African suppliers, are stored properly and opened in front of you, with the batch number recorded in your file.

Prepared for the unexpected

Side effects are rare, but a doctor is trained to recognise and manage them, and brings the same emergency kit a clinic would.

Treatments & prices

Treatments, priced simply.

Anti-wrinkle injections are one rate: R65 per unit. Your doctor works out how many units you need at your consultation, so you always know the cost before you commit. The ranges below are typical starting points. Dermal fillers are priced per syringe.

Medical uses

Not only for lines.

The same muscle-relaxing injections have well-established medical uses. They are assessed and prescribed like any other treatment, and for many people they make the biggest difference to how a day feels.

Bruxism

Teeth grinding and jaw clenching

If you wake with a tight jaw, tension headaches at the temples, or your dentist has mentioned worn teeth, relaxing the masseter muscles reduces the force of the clenching, including the grinding that happens while you sleep. Typically 40 to 60 units; relief builds over two to four weeks and lasts four to six months.

How masseter treatment works

Chronic migraine

Fewer migraine days

For people with chronic migraine, meaning headaches on 15 or more days a month, a series of small injections around the head and neck, repeated every 12 weeks, can reduce how often migraines strike and how hard they hit. Dr Philippa assesses each case on its own merits and is happy to work alongside your GP or neurologist.

Something else?

Ask, and you will get a straight answer

Botulinum toxin is also used for excessive sweating, eye and facial twitching and some neck and muscle conditions. Dr Philippa does not offer all of these herself. If something is outside her scope she will say so, and point you to someone who does it well.

How it works

A clinic-standard treatment, at your kitchen table.

From first message to follow-up, here is what to expect.

  1. Say hello on WhatsApp

Tell us what is bothering you and where you are. A photo helps, but is not required.

  2. Consultation

A short medical consultation covers your history, medication, what you would like to change and what to expect. You get an honest recommendation, an exact unit count and the price.

  3. The visit

Your doctor comes to your home or office with everything needed. Treatment takes 15 to 30 minutes; all you need is a chair and good light. You pay by cash or EFT once it is done.

  4. Results and review

Changes start within 3 to 5 days and settle at about two weeks, lasting around three to four months. A two-week review checks that everything has settled as it should.

About

Meet Dr Philippa Volschenk

Dr Volschenk is a medical doctor who qualified from the University of Pretoria in 2021, with eight years in clinical medicine behind her and a year in aesthetic practice.

She completed her internship at Kalafong Hospital and her community service in Kimberley, and later worked in medevac and emergency medicine before moving into rehabilitation medicine. After years of working predominantly with critically ill patients, she was drawn to aesthetic medicine as a way to reconnect with the more positive, holistic side of healthcare, completing her basic aesthetics training with Medskills in 2025. She quickly discovered how much confidence and wellbeing are shaped by how people feel about themselves, and now enjoys combining medical expertise with subtle aesthetic treatments that enhance what is already there.

“I started PS Aesthetics because I wanted to help people feel more confident in themselves, while keeping results subtle, natural and true to who they already are.”

Aesthetic medicine is medicine. Every treatment starts with a consultation, every dose is prescribed, and every product is handled the way a prescription medicine should be. The result is a face that looks rested, not treated.

Why the person holding the needle should be a doctor

In South Africa it is not a preference but the law. Here is what medical training adds, and five questions to ask anyone who offers to inject you.

Jaw clenching and teeth grinding: how masseter injections help

Some of the most grateful messages I receive have nothing to do with wrinkles. They come from people who have stopped waking up with a sore jaw.

What a home visit actually looks like

“Is it really safe to do this at home?” Yes. Here is exactly what happens from the moment I arrive to the moment I leave.

Questions

Before you book.

Does it hurt?

Most people describe it as a few quick pinpricks, each lasting a second or two. The needles are very fine and no numbing is needed, though an ice pack is always on hand.

When will I see results, and how long do they last?

The first softening shows within 3 to 5 days, with the full effect at about two weeks. Results typically last three to four months. With regular treatments, some people find they last a little longer.

Is there any downtime?

No. You can go straight back to your day. Small bumps at the injection sites settle within about 20 minutes, and the occasional light bruise can be covered with make-up.

For the first four hours, stay upright and do not rub or massage the area. For 24 hours, skip strenuous exercise, saunas and alcohol. Leave facials and face massages for two weeks.

How many units will I need?

It depends on the area, how strong the muscle is and how soft you would like the result to be. Typical ranges are listed under Treatments. Your exact dose is set at your consultation, and you will know the price before anything is done.

Which product will I receive?

Xeomin®, a botulinum toxin type A made by Merz. Dr Philippa uses one product only, so results are consistent from one visit to the next and a unit always means the same thing. It is a prescription medicine, prescribed and administered by her.

Do you do fillers?

Yes: lip filler and cheek filler, using hyaluronic acid filler. Filler is priced per syringe and confirmed at your consultation. Hyaluronic acid filler can be dissolved with a prescription medicine if that is ever needed, which is one more reason to have it placed by a doctor.

Can you treat teeth grinding or migraines?

Yes. Jaw clenching and teeth grinding (bruxism) and chronic migraine are two well-established medical uses of these injections. See Medical uses, or ask about anything else and you will get a straight answer or a referral.

Who should not have anti-wrinkle injections?

They are not suitable if you are pregnant, trying to conceive or breastfeeding; if you have certain neuromuscular conditions such as myasthenia gravis; if there is an active skin infection in the area; or if you have reacted to botulinum toxin before. You must be 18 or older. All of this is covered in your consultation.

Is it safe to have this done at home?

Yes, when it is done by a registered medical practitioner to the same standard as a clinic: a medical consultation first, sterile single-use equipment, properly stored and registered products, and emergency medication on hand. That is exactly what your doctor brings.

How do I pay, and does medical aid cover it?

Payment is due on the day of treatment, by cash or EFT. Dr Philippa gives you her banking details on the day, so there is nothing to arrange beforehand.

Cosmetic treatments are not covered by medical aid. Some schemes will consider medical uses, such as treatment for teeth grinding or chronic migraine, if a motivation is submitted; ask whether that applies to you.

What if I am not happy with the result?

Come to your two-week review. If something has settled unevenly, it is usually a small adjustment. The effect wears off naturally over a few months and cannot be reversed early, which is one more reason to start conservatively.
